Acadia was our first trip with 8 people, and it was also the first trip where we were traveling in style. We set up camp in Bar Harbor where we rented both sides of a duplex with all the modern conveniences. We traveled through Maine in two matching Grand Marquis. We counted off and the odds stayed in unit #3 and the evens stayed in unit #4. One of the cars had an even number license plate and the other had an odd number license plate. That set up the theme for the week. The evens made up a little song "We are the evens the mighty mighty evens, and you're just odd!"
The trip was christened the first night with toasting time in the "odd" duplex.
The first day we hiked at Schoodic Pennisula. We had a picnic lunch there and then climbed around on the rocks and enjoyed the ocean view. After lunch we took a short hike up Blue Berry Hill where we got caught in the rain. On the way home we stopped at a road side stand to buy fresh blueberries for pancakes the next morning.
The second day we started hiking at Park Loop where we climbed on the rocky shore. We had a picnic lunch on Sand Beach, but as you can see there were a lot of rocks on Sand Beach.
After lunch we hiked on Ocean Path. Rock climbing was a big attraction to us and we up to the challenge.
On the Ocean Path Trail we talked to a woman about our travels and how we became the BVEs. She admired our group and said she wished she had a group of friends to travel with. When we got back and looked at pictures that night. we saw that she was in our group shot. She became a BVE Wanta Be.
While on The Ocean Path Trail, we sat and watched the lobster fisherman.
That night we ate barbeque at Mainly Meats and Atlantic Brewing Company.
On the third day we got up early (4:30am) to see the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain. Sunrise was at 5:44am. The sun rise was beautiful and it was very cold on the top of the mountain.
After watching the sunrise we drove down the mountain to the Jordan Pond House and had a breakfast tailgate in the parking lot. After breakfast we hiked the Jordan Pond Trail. A 3.3 mile hike around the pond. This gave us an opportunity to skip rocks.
After the hike we met the Friends of Acadia and group of 80 Somethings that hike in Acadia every Tuesday. We talked to them for a while and they became our mentors. We took a picture with them . The BVE are kneeled in front - except for Sue who stood up with the other group. Is it possible that she was trying to leave us and join them?
Later that day we took a Whale Watching Tour. We were out for quite a while before we spotted the whale. A Hump Back Whale named Breaker. He swam by the boat for quite a while and we were able to get lots pictures.
The fourth morning we started the day off by walking through a drive though coffee shop. We had a big day ahead of us including a visit to a winery and a Lobster Boil.
We had been invited to friends of Connie's for a Lobster Boil. On the way to their house we stopped and talked to Brian, a lobster fisherman. We talked to him and learned he was a 5th generation fisherman. When we got to Brairnbrae the family home of Connie's friends Evan and Jill, we found out that Brian is the person we were going to get the Lobsters for dinner. We went back there to purchase the lobsters for dinner.
We had a great lobster dinner along the shore and toasted the evening with Moxie. Most of us put our Lobster in the pot of boiling water. We ate lobsta on the rocks and threw the shells where the tide would wash them out to sea. After dinner we watched the sunset and had a great view of the stars while we listened to the tide coming in. This evening was the highlight of the trip.
The fifth day we took a bike in Acadia. We started out at Eagle Lake and biked together for a while, before breaking into two group. Keeping with our 'even' and 'odd' theme the bikes had numbers and as it turned out all the even had even bikes and the odds except for Jill had odd number bikes, but hers was a different color than all the others so that was just odd. Lisa R, Connie, Jill and Brenda were looking for a challenge and biked 29 miles.
Julie, Peggy, Sue and Lisa L, were less interested in a challenge. They biked 18 miles and stopped at Jordan House for fresh popovers and tea.
While on the bike ride Lisa "Lancome" uttered these words of wisdom - Watch video above.

On the sixth day we went into Bass Harbor to see a Lighthouse, climb on more rocks and have lunch outside near the ocean one more time.

That afternoon Lisa R., Brenda, Connie and Jill went kayaking. Lisa L., Sue, Peggy and Julie went shopping.
That evening we had an Iron Chef Throw Down. The Odds made appetizers and the main entree. The Evens made salad and dessert. Each course had to have a connection to Maine. Here we are enjoying blueberry jello shots.

The next morning we got up at 5:30 for the 4 hour drive back to Portland to catch our plane home.

We hiked to the house and took our first group shot in front of the mansion. Then we talked to Bob about the grounds and how best to see everything. We tried to get him to give us a private tour but he said no.
