Day 1 - Saturday, September 26, 2026
This trip started a little different, we traveled in pairs to Eureka California. Brenda and Peggy left at 5:45 AM and arrived in Eureka at 12 o’clock. Lisa L and Julie left at 7 AM and arrived in Eureka at 1 o’clock. Connie and Lisa R are to arrive the next day.
We are staying a a house in McKinleyville, but can get in until 4pm, so we stopped for lunch at Joe’s Green Barn. Nice little cozy hometown feel to it with big portions after lunch. After lunch we picked up a few groceries and by then it was 4 o’clock and time to go to our new home.
We were all pretty tired and had had a big late lunch so we decided to snack rather than make dinner. We had our first unofficial toasting time with chips, salsa and hummus while we caught up with each other and checked out the house.
Day 2 - Sunday, September 27, 2026
We got up around 7:30 and got the coffee going. Brenda and Peggy went to the local Catholic Church, while Lisa and Julie got cleaned up and made breakfast. Our first of many bowls for oatmeal with all the fixings: bananas, blueberries, greek yogurt, and granola.
During breakfast, Connie texted and said she was on the plane but she wasn’t sure if Lisa was going to make it. Minutes later we got another text saying "Lisa made it just as they were closing the doors". Another BVE moment to cheer about. Their plane is expected about 1pm.
As we've gotten older, several of us have been doing yoga stretches to get the muscles going each morning. We decide it was a good way for us to start the day on this trip also. Just 10 minutes of gentle stretching which we plan to do each day. After that, we had time to go to Costco in Eureka to stock up on a few supplies while we waited for their plane to get in.
Then it was time to head to the airport and pick up Connie and Lisa R. We came to see Redwoods, but the first tree we saw at the airport was a Palm Tree. The airport was only about 15 minutes from the house. Their flight was on time and he headed back to house to drop off their bags and let them get settled. The house has a sunken living room and bedroom. Julie had a bit of and issue with the night before and warned them about it, but Lisa R took a spill anyway. Luckily no medical attention was needed.
After getting settled we went to a deli called Central Sandwich for lunch.

After lunch we headed for Clam Beach for our first view of the Pacific Ocean.. In amazing BVE fashion the sun finally came out of the clouds and we took a 2 1/2 mile walk on the beach.
Our next stop was the world's largest totem pole according to the sign. We we not very impressed. If was ut not that ornate. And it was in the parking lot of the Safeway store. So we picked up a few groceries before heading home.
At the house we had our first official toasting time of the trip and called Sue to get her in on the toast.
Dinner was frozen pizza followed by ice cream with Bailies.
Lights out around 9:30.

Today we are heading the Redwood National Park. Breakfast at 8am and time to do our stretching before our departure at 9am. Our first stop was at Thomas Kuchel Visitor Center, where we talked to a Ranger, got maps and recommendations for hikes.
Our next stop is Lady Bird Johnson Grove. Redwood became a National Park in 1968 during the Johnson Administration. In 1969, President Nixon dedicated the Lady Bird Johnson Grove for her part in preserving this area.
Took lots of pictures along the way of giant redwoods.
By then is was 12:30, so we stopped for lunch at a Trillium Falls picnic area. After lunch we hiked to the falls. After seeing more large trees, the falls seemed small, but it was still beautiful and gave us a chance to climb on some rocks. In this old growth forest we saw lots of downed trees and were amazed at the size of the trees and how they become nurse trees and continue the circle of life.
Back in the car at 2:30 and heading to the Grove of Titans along the Newton Drury scenic Parkway. Part of this road was one lane and very narrow. Meeting cars was a challenge, but our fearless driver Brenda was up to the challenge.
We finally got to the Grove of the Titans Trail and we were looking at a cluster of trees when a couple hiking came by and said "well you make a nice cluster yourselves".
It was getting late and the plan was to just hike a short way and be back in the car by five for the trip out of the park. At 4:59 we were in the car and heading out.
On the way back we finally spotted a sign for the park. Brenda pulled over and we took a quick group shot.
Back in the car, Brenda spotted a scenic vista to the ocean and pulled over. It was a great place for some group shots and watching and listening to the ocean waves. We met a young man who was living in a van that he and his father had tricked out. He is going to college and working on a documentary of his mountain climbing.
A little further down the road we saw a herd of Roosevelt Elk.
Followed by a beautiful sun set.
We arrived home at 7:30. Started taking showers and getting dinner ready. Everyone was pretty tired so after dinner, we only did a short picture watch before going to bed at 10 o’clock.

The early birds got up around 7:30 and started breakfast. Another delicious bowl of oatmeal and all the toppings. Breakfast was at 8am followed by our morning stretches. We were in the car by 9am heading south to Humboldt County State Park.
We arrived at the visitor center at Humbolt Redwoods State Park around 10:15. It had very nice displays, every bit as nice as the National Park. We were amazed by the truck that was made from a single Redwood log. It had been hollowed out with a truck motor and driving area in from and living quarters had been built into the back of it.
We talked to Ranger about what trails we hike hike. The first was a short Gould Nature Trail, which was right across the road. Once again we were amazed at the size of the trees and how small the pine cones were. Seems the bigger the tree the small the cone and the smaller the tree the larger the cone as we would see later on this trip. We also learned that the Burroughs actually hold hundreds of buds that can be used to clone the tree when they’re under stress. The trees can reproduce by both seeds in the pine cones and clone with the buds.
We were back in the car at 11:30 and headed to Founders Grove, The grove contains the Founders Tree. This tree was dedicated to the Founders of the Save - The Redwoods League in September of 1931.
This is also where we saw a rare albino Redwood, Notice the white needles in the picture to the right. There were also many trees that had been burned with large holes in the tree, yet they were still alive and thriving above the burn scars.
Humboldt Redwoods State Park has the largest remaining contiguous ancient coastal redwood forest on earth. It is 53,000 acres and contains some of the tallest and largest trees. We noticed that I downed tree that we thought was huge earlier, we small compared to the ones we saw on this hike.
We stopped for lunch at the picnic area at Rockefeller Forest. We met a young couple there who's young son Noah like Peggy's cheetos.
After lunch we hiked Rockefeller Loop Trail. On this short .6 mile loop we saw 13 of the world's 100 largest trees. One the left is Tall Tree and on the right is Giant Tree. Such descriptive names!
It was a short trail that took us along the Eel River. There was not much water in river, but we did get some rock skipping and limbo in on this hike.
We also recreated a scene from our trip Glacier National Park and we moved a big log.
After the hike we met a couple from Montana on the way to the car. We talked to them about their travels and they recommendedthat we go to go McCloud Falls. We plan to take their advice and head there while we are in Redding.
Then back in car and drove on in to the Drury Trail and look in hopes of finding a banana slug. It was 440 when we started hiking and the goal is to be back in the car by five so we have to look quick. We didn't find any banana slugs, but we did see lots of Redwood-Sorrel and a downed trees that we couldn't resist climbing on.

Drove back to the house at McKinleyville and got there at six. Perfect time to sit on the deck in the sun and have a toasting time together.
Then we started making leftover dinner to clean out the fridge before we leave in the morning for Redding.

Today we travel from McKinleyville to Redding. We had breakfast at 8:30, packed up the van, then we we were in our Yoga stretching by Lisa R. before getting in the car and heading to Redding and our new house.

Our first stop on the way to Redding was in Willow Creek. There have been numerous sightings of Big Foot so we had to stop in the musuem and check it out. At the museum we would told about a great place down the road to stop for lunch.
And that is what we did. We had lunch at the straw House Café along the river the Trinity river. Cute little place with delicious food. The view of the river was gorgeous. We were back on the road at 1 o’clock.
Next up Weaverville. It was a quaint little town with Red and White store fronts. They were ready for Halloween and had skeletons on all the street lights. We went through a few stores and arts shops, but didn't stay long.

Brenda did an excellent job driving once again and arrived at the house in Reading and arrived at 3:30. It is much warmer here that it had been in McKinleyville. While we got used to the climate, we settled in and then went for groceries and to gas up the car.
Then we enjoyed toasting time on the deck followed by dinner of spaghetti salad and garlic bread.
After dinner we learned a new card game called Swoop. We played cards until it was time to call it a night around 10pm.

Breakfast at 7:45 with an 8:30 departure heading to Lassen National Park. It's an hour and a half drive with a change of about 8000 feet in elevation. We were running late so we skipped the yoga stretching this morning.
We found the sign right before we got to the park entrance. Brenda did an excellent job of pulling over and parking the car so we could use the hood to set up the camera for the official group shot.
Next stop was the visitor center and museum near Manzanita Lake. Just as we got there 2 bus loads of kids arrived. This was not our first rodeo, so we headed to the bathroom first to get ahead of the masses. Then we went into the Visitor Center to get hike recommendations from a ranger.
Our first hike was the Manzanita Lake Trail. The hike was about a mile around the lake. This is where we had the best view of Lassen Volcano.

First time all week we saw much wildlife lots of birds and squirrels on this trail.
We even caught this bird doing its morning stretches. Notice the open chest and head moving side to side.
Towards the end of the trail we met a couple from Arcata–Eureka. This was one of the few times we gave our card to someone on this trip. They had traveled and hiked extensively and had lots of ideas and recommendations. Unfortunately we only have one day left.
Drove to Devastated Area and had a picnic lunch. All the tables were in the sun and near the bathrooms so we chose a nice shady spot with some rocks to sit on .
After lunch, we hiked the Devastation Area Interpretive Trail. This was a 1/2 mile trail through an area where hot rocks were thrown when the volcano erupted. This is one of the Hot Rocks surrounded by Hot BVEs.
Hiked to boiling lake. This was a mile and a half hike with a steep climb at the very begging. When we got there we would have missed it had it not been for a sign. It was only a small puddle boiling.
The destination was disappointing but, it was a nice hike. Some of it was through a fire damage area. We have driven through these area, but this the the first up close hike through one.
Next stop was the sulfur works, where we saw more boiling water in a stream with steam coming off of it. The smell was quite pungent. We did not stick around long enough for a group picture here.

Stopped at the visitor center did a little shopping filled our water bottles and use the restrooms before heading back to Redding. Brenda found a shortcut that knocked over 40 minutes off the drive and we experienced a part of California that not many tourists get to see. She is an excellent driver.
Back at the house at 5:41 for a quick toasting. Everyone got cleaned up and then we had Shepard's Pie for dinner. After dinner, we went to the Sundial Bridge. The Sundial Bridge is a footbridge over the Sacramento River and is part of Redding's award winning trail system. It cost $24 million, took 11 years to build and deck is lit with 219 lights.
Returned to the house around 9 o’clock. We played a couple games of Swoop and had a Bailey’s nightcap before heading to bed.
Friday, October 2, 2026
We had breakfast at 7:45 followed by yoga and then into the car ready to go head to McCloud Falls at 8:30. It is about 1 hour and 15 minutes north of Redding.
We started at Fowler‘s campground and the first thing we saw was a deer just hanging out by the side of the road. We had to park the car just outside the campground since we weren't camping. From there we took the trail to Lower Falls. The Fall colors were coming in and it was a beautiful hike along the McCloud river to the Lower Falls.
We turned around and headed back to Fowler Campground. There we stopped and talked to an 87 year old woman camping there by herself. She told us that she likes to camp and goes about once a week. She is an inspiration to all of us.
Then we kept hiking to Middle Falls. This is the largest and most picturesque of the 3 water falls. We spent quite a bit of time climbing on the rocks and taking pictures from various view points.
We had lunch at Fowler campground where we were squatters at empty camp site.
Then we drove to the Upper Falls parking lot. We saw Upper Falls which really only had one view point and you couldn't get to close. The hike from Upper Falls to Middle Falls was beautiful with all the fall colors.
Hiking back from Middle Falls to Upper Falls we had a view of Mt Shasta. With all the trees we never had a clear view of it. Later in the parking lot we had a little better view. The best view was driving back to Redding.
Once we got home, it was about 330 and we spent the next two hours looking at all of our pictures and sharing shots between each other. After picture time we went out on the deck and noticed that we has a pretty good view of Mt Shasta from there.
By then it was time for dinner and we ate the stuff that was in the fridge to clean out
Played a few games of swoop and went to bed around 10.

After the early wake up call, we slept in a little later. Had breakfast cleaned up the house had yoga and then left the house around 10:30 to drop off the rental car and go to the airport.
Our flight from Redding to Denver was on time at the Denver Denver airport Lisa, Connie and Brenda said goodbye to Lisa and Julie as we were going to our different final destinations.
